|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth LE | continuo | Canal principal.
Mexico has one of the best earthquake early-warning systems in the world. But the warning ends where the earthquake begins. Baliza Sísmica works in the next window: the rescue window.
The gap it fills
SASMEX gives 20 to 120 seconds of notice before the wave arrives, and those seconds save lives: time to get out, to take cover, to stop an operating room.
But if the building falls and you are trapped, no alert can help anymore. A different clock starts, one in which every passing hour lowers the chances of finding someone alive. Baliza Sísmica works in that second window. It does not compete with early warning: it begins where early warning ends.
How it works
Watches
It runs as a persistent service with a visible notification. It reads the accelerometer at 50 Hz and batches the samples in the sensor, so the processor wakes up once every five seconds. It restarts on its own after the phone reboots.
Decides
A single jolt is not enough: there must be sustained shaking for three seconds, then an impact of at least 3 g, and then sixty seconds of stillness. If you unlock the phone, it cancels. Only then does a sixty-second countdown begin, which you can stop at any time.
Broadcasts
It freezes the last known position and repeats it over every channel the phone has available, adapting the pace as the battery drops. If one channel fails, the others carry on.
The channels
| Channel | Cadence | What it's for |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth LE | continuous | Main channel. Any nearby phone can receive it without installing anything beforehand. |
| Sound | every 5 min | Three 3 kHz tones. Teams with geophones work in listen-and-silence cycles. |
| Flashlight | with the sound | Visible in voids and at night. |
| Wi-Fi Aware | every 15 min | Greater range where the hardware supports it. |
| SMS | initial and every 6 h | Works without mobile data. |
| HTTPS | with retries | Sends to a private server when there is a network. |
The Bluetooth packet is 31 bytes: coordinates, fix time, battery, an identifier and reserved space. On phones with Bluetooth 5 it also adds name, phone number and medical notes.
Rescuer mode
The same app, on any second phone, becomes a receiver. It shows nearby beacons with their identifier, coordinates, battery and a proximity radar.
It does not show meters, and that is deliberate. It tells you whether you are getting closer or farther, and whether you are at the best point you have found so far — which is how a radio source is located in practice: sweeping the area and converging on the maximum.
Measured one meter from the beacon, with a single masonry wall in between. In free space that same distance would read around −50 dBm. One wall costs some 40 to 50 decibels, and the signal sits at the edge of what a receiver can hear. That is why the app never translates signal into distance: the formula would have announced tens of meters with the person one step away.
Privacy and security
Before an emergency, the beacon transmits nothing. It watches motion locally, on the phone, and broadcasts no data.
During a confirmed emergency — and only then — it broadcasts over Bluetooth, unencrypted, the information you have entered: an identifier and, on phones with Bluetooth 5, also your name, phone number and medical notes. This is a deliberate decision: in a rescue, letting any rescuer read you without pairing any device can save decisive minutes.
What it isn't
- It is not an earthquake alert. It warns of nothing before the quake. SASMEX and the apps that distribute its signal are for that.
- It does not replace any rescue protocol or guarantee that you will be found. It is a complementary layer for the proximity-search phase.
- Range under rubble is short. 2.4 GHz is severely attenuated by reinforced concrete, steel and water — exactly the material of a collapse. It helps refine the last few meters, not locate from afar.
- It depends on the phone surviving. If the device is destroyed or the battery runs out, there is no beacon.
Status
In development. The app is built and tested: detection and the emergency chain work end to end, and Bluetooth broadcast and reception are verified between two real phones.
What remains is the measurement campaign that no desk test can replace: real battery life per phone model, and range with actual rubble in between.
